Stem Separation
A finished mix is a locked box. The theme has the vocal you want for a trailer, but it is under the band. The menu track would make a great combat layer, if the drums were on their own. The capture has the crowd you need, buried under commentary. Without the session files, getting at any of it means re-recording or rebuilding from scratch.
Stem Separation on Layer splits a mix into the sound you describe and everything else. Upload the track, name the voice, instrument or sound to pull out, and get both halves back, ready to reuse, remix or rebalance.
01
Key capabilities
Describe the Sound to Pull Out
Name what you want in plain language, the lead vocal, the kick and snare, the crowd, and Layer separates that sound from the mix.
The Stem and the Residual
Every run returns two parts: the sound you asked for, and the mix without it. A vocal removal and an a cappella come from the same pass.
Music, Speech and Sound
Separate instruments from a score, dialogue from a scene, or one sound from a field recording with the same tool.
Build Up a Full Set of Stems
Run the residual through again to pull the next part, until the track is split into the stems your edit needs.
Part of the Audio Toolkit
Separated stems flow straight into Audio Inpaint, Extend Audio and the timeline, so taking a mix apart and putting a new version together happen in one place.
02
How it works
Upload the mix
Bring in a finished track, a scene with dialogue and music, or a recording with the sound you need inside it.
Describe the stem
Write what to pull out, a voice, an instrument or a sound, and run the separation.
Use both halves
Download the stem and the residual, or keep working: separate the next part, extend a stem, or place them on the timeline.

Questions about Stem Separation
What is stem separation?+
Stem separation splits a mixed recording into its parts. On Layer you describe the sound you want, a voice, an instrument or a noise, and get back that sound on its own along with the rest of the mix without it.
What can I separate?+
Anything you can describe in the mix: vocals, drums, bass, a lead instrument, dialogue, crowd noise or a specific sound effect. The same tool handles music, speech and general sound.
Do I get the rest of the mix too?+
Yes. Each separation returns the sound you asked for and the residual, the mix with that sound removed, so you can use either half.
How do I split a track into several stems?+
Run the separation once per stem. Pull the vocals, then run the residual again for the drums, and so on, until you have the parts you need.
How is this different from Audio Cleanup?+
Audio Cleanup is for rescuing a recording: removing noise and isolating clean voice. Stem Separation is for taking a finished mix apart so its parts can be reused, remixed or rebalanced.
